Do you know what happened 100 years ago this coming March? Albert Einstein published his general theory of relativity. Einstein believed that "space and time are not fixed, which was what others had thought, but are flexible, dynamic phenomena like other processes of the universe." He posited that the speed of light is the same in a vacuum, and the laws of physics do not change regarding inert objects. And as has been proved by atomic clocks on land and in a high-altitude airplane, time would move more slowly in proximity to a powerful gravitational field, such as that of a planet in the void of space. This last fact is used in keeping GPS systems synchronized.

Wait. If space and time are not fixed, then maybe the events depicted in the movie Back to the Future could still come to pass. In fact, many of them have, while others are not yet our reality. While we were there, we went into a show store looking for some new hiking boots. Here is a shot of seven shoes for sale. What? You only see six? That because there is a shoe on the lower shelf that is camouflaged, so you cannot see it.

The Beatles will soon have a new album, entitled 1+1. Do have an appetite for a newly remastered version of familiar songs? Obviously, Apple is betting that enough of us will. This story includes a new video of them singing Revolution. I enjoyed it. Will I buy the album? Right now, I am guessing no, but who can say for sure.

Speaking of revolution, have you ever heard of the Civil War? For some reason (and it is NOT because I was actually around back then), Matthew Brady's photos of the war have always fascinated me. At the time, the technology did not exist to take color photos, but some Reddit users have made some of the shots into colorized versions. Read the story and check them out. They really do seem to come to life. Here is an example, and that is General George Custer in the lower right.

One Day More... At Work

After a few days off, I am back for my second day of work in a row. I already miss the mountains and the coolness and the quaking aspens. Oh well, I cannot sit and daydream all day...or can I? No, I cannot.

In the past, just around this time of year, our daughter-in-love used to toast some pumpkin seeds for us. They were super-yummy. I don't know if Alton Brown can match her flavor, but if so, you will love these toasted pumpkin seeds.

You know that time we were talking and you said you wished there was a website where you could get new images of Earth from space every day. Next time we talk about that, I will tell you that NASA has set up just such a website. Go look at it and rejoice.

Of course, you already know about that site because you are reading it right now. So, the other day, we were driving around Telluride and looked to my left and saw this.

I had Dad pull over so I could walk back and look at the scene a little closer. I was interested in the way the road went into and disappeared in the trees.

However, while I had zoomed in a bit to catch the road and the trees, I excised the trees and their brilliant foliage around the scene. So, I took another photo in landscape mode so you can see more of the scene. Hmm, these look much more colorful on my monitor at home.

"YOU get a new car, and YOU get a new car." Remember when that was a phrase often repeated when Oprah Winfrey would have those annual giveaways on her TV program? Now, maybe some people will be hearing, "YOU get to lose weight, and YOU get to lose weight." She has purchased 10% of Weight Watchers. It's stock jumped 90% on the news.

Four fitness apps for your smartphone, and three of them are free. Why not? Go check them out and get up and move. I was wacko busy at work yesterday, but still could have found time to do something after I finished working yesterday, and I did not. Might one of these have gotten me off the couch? I don't know, but I will check them out and decide.

Did I mention that my friend at work, Pat, has lung cancer which has spread to her lymph nodes and brain? She is addressing the brain cancer first, although no date has been set. She is not a Christian, so pray for both her physical symptoms as well as her spiritual awakening. As one of her three best friends at work (that I know of. Two of us are Christians and one I am not sure of), this may open a door that lets us witness to her without her taking offense.

Sorry. I Was Out of Town

Oh, you didn't even notice that I have not posted anything for the last few days? Well, shame on you. Anyway, we are back. You'll hear more about our week below and in the coming days.

Look, let's just get the big news over with right from the start. Yes, I might have been a little over the posted speed limit when I crested a hill and saw a state patrol vehicle sitting on the opposite shoulder of the road. He was very kind, but still issued me a ticket. I haven't paid it yet, but I just got home from vacation over the weekend. Give me some time. I will. Up until the speed limit dropped by 10 mph, I had the cruise control set for 5 mph over the posted limit. I felt that was safe. Once it dropped, I hadn't reacted and got caught.

Just 20 minutes earlier, we had been filling the tank when Dad decided to air up a couple of tires that were a little low in the higher altitude of the Colorado Rockies. He noticed one had a crack in the sidewall, probably from one of the off-road trips. So, we had to unpack all our gear to reach the spare tire. We replaced it and reloaded everything and headed off toward our meeting with the afore-mentioned state trooper.

Here is the first photo (actually a panorama of two shots merged together) of this year's SW Colorado trip from a road near Telluride. We missed the best colors by 7-10 days, but as you will see, there were still areas of brightness.

By stepping off that same road to the right, I followed the wooden fence you barely notice and made it central to this next shot.

I then stepped off the left side of the road to capture the mountain on the left of the above photos with the colors in front of it (the above two photos show more of the evergreens than the gold of the aspen).

We rented a house and did not stay in a tent. That doesn't mean you shouldn't try to give your kids a tent-like bed they can enjoy every night. Read the tutorial here.

Preacher Bro and his wife were with us and my folks in Colorado. They are part of a Dr Pepper-loving family. Maybe they will like a Dr Pepper Pulled Pork Sandwich? Does that sound tasty to you? When I was in college, the worst thing to worry about was sleeping late and missing my first class, or those days when the meal was bad and I was forced to have a PB&J sandwich. Now, there are more and more campus shootings. I saw there was a shooting at Northern AZ University overnight with one person killed. It is scary world for our kids and grandkids, isn't it?

It is John Lennon's 75th birthday. That's a weird thought, since in our minds, he stopped aging when he was killed in 1980. Ringo was actually the oldest of the group, and George was the youngest.

A story about the apparent battery life of the iPhone using different chips is shared because of my interest in the media name for the 'scandal'. Have you seen reports that some iPhone 6s models with A9 processors from Samsung have substandard battery life compared to iPhone 6s models with A9 processors sourced from TSMC? In the articles, they are calling it batterygate. Apple is debunking that rumor, but the article ends with this statement, "Now, hopefully, batterygate can join the likes of antennagate and bendgate in the annals of scandals that were quickly blown out of proportion and thankfully died just as quickly as they appeared." So, we've got batterygate, antennagate, and bendgate. Thanks to the Watergate scandal in the 1970s, all of the crazy scandals end in -gate.

Let's look at a photo I played with of a sailboat silhouette from a trip to San Diego. I cropped it down and pushed the exposure a little bit. Once I started, it reminded me of the type of images you see on inspirational posters or something.

You know what I want to do. Look back and find the original of this photo that I altered a few years ago. I wanted it to look like a period shot, so I made it sepia-colored, edited out cars and people, and added a frame that looks like it was hung using tape or something. I wonder what the original looked like

While I was looking for photos to share, I came across one of our oldest grandchild from just a few years ago looking all Halloweeny (is that a word?).

I just saw a write-up on a new type of camera. When you take a photo with it, it uses 10 individual lenses to take and then process your shot. It even lets you adjust focus and depth of field after the shot is taken. It won't be available until Summer 2016, but you can read about it and see test images now.

If you have time (both to watch videos and to search for them), check out the Paramount Vault channel on youtube. I have glanced at it, but am not sure if there are movies I would want to watch. The site includes both clips and the full-length films.

When we had the GRANDS last week, we stopped by one of those Halloween stores. They wanted to get their pictures taken wearing some ugly masks, but I wouldn't let them. So instead, here they are in their natural looks.

That evening, at the pizza organ place, I caught them dancing near us. There is no telling which song inspired these moves.

Did you watch that One Direction parody video I posted yesterday? If not, go and watch it now. I talked to my father last night and said he actually laughed out loud at it (as did I).

I am so distraught about some of you not following the links I share that I am closing up today's post immediately. No, you cannot convince me to stay. Let's just see if I show up tomorrow. Yes, let's just see.

One Direction to Kennedy Conspiracy to Air Hockey

If someone asked you which college is the hardest to get into in your state, would you know? I wouldn't. That is, until now. Business Insider has determined which is most difficult by state. Harvard should not surprise you. Northwest Nazarene University might. Check out the full list here.

What is the most 'instagrammed' spot in each state? If you guessed Grand Canyon for AZ, you would be correct. If you guessed Bourbon Street in LA, you get a second gold star. Yellowstone Park in WY is another obvious choice. Vegas Strip in NV? Yup. Kansas State University is a little less obvious. Remember, though, that is placed tagged in Instagram, not necessarily the most popular spot in the state.

Yes, I did have a lot of Beatles albums back in the day. Yes, I have even more of their music now in digital form. So, do I need any newer versions of anything. My first reaction is no, but Apple Music is asking me to rethink that decision. They have a new version of the hits album '1' coming out called '1+'. They think I will want it because "the music is offered in a 'new stereo' and 5.1 surround (two separate things)." I will reserve judgement for now.

Did Lee Harvey Oswald kill President John F. Kennedy? That is still a strong possibility. Did the CIA know more about plots and the situation than they told the Warren Commission and the public? I am sure they did. And as of today, I KNOW that they did, because the CIA has declassified some information that the then-director led a 'benign' cover-up. Read this story to learn more.

Remember that we kept the GRANDS last weekend. Our oldest GRAND put me onto this clever video of the final scene from Star Wars: Episode IV A Lost Hope (or as I call it, the original Star Wars movie) as it would be without the famous John Williams music. They did add in some sound effects like a Wookiee scream. It's only a few minutes long, so check it out.

She also told me about this hilarious video of One Direction singing Story of My Life. It is dubbed with really bad singers and it also hilarious.

Last weekend with the GRANDS, after mini-golf, we went inside for a few video games. One of them that I had never seen was called Pac-Man Smash. It is a typical air hockey games, but with a twist. The first photo below shows the table and the scoreboard. See those colored discs on either side of the board?

Well, during the game, they are periodically released and, suddenly, instead of hitting the single large disc around, you have a couple dozen of these smaller discs and it is pandemonium. You can see them below. We played it more than once.

Let's add an extra touch of sweetness to today's blog post before we go our separate ways.

Legos are Grand, And So Are My GRANDS

Friday night, the GRANDS started a three night visit with us. I had to work late, so I think they went to McDonald's and their indoor playground that first evening. Saturday was brunch, and then mini-golf in the evening. Sunday lunch was with their great-grandparents at a local Mexican place. We had a lot of fun.

Does your town have one of those pizza places that has a big pipe organ (plus various and sundry other musical instruments) in it? Our does. Here is one of the songs that we heard Sunday night when we took the GRANDS there for ice cream. We also heard Phantom of the Opera and Be Our Guest (both requested by the GRANDS).

They went home last night. This is their Fall break, so no school in the morning. At first, we sat with the TV on, but no sound. Shh. Listen. Nothing. The grandkids like to have the TV on, plus their electronic devices, and an iPod playing music while they perform their concerts. We had a crazy few nights.

I always check beaches looking for this type of fence so I can take a photo like this. Do you like it? They had one like this in an early scene of Jaws that I remember, too.

Here's a photo from our garage. No, not really. I would have neither the patience to build this nor the money to purchase 500,000 Lego bricks. One man had a dream, though.

Have you ever heard of the singing group One Direction? I know they are a newer group, and the granddaughters like them. Anyway, they do a song called Story of My Life. However, this video is a parody of that song with same bad voices overlaying the original singers. You really should watch it. I laughed out loud.

The other day, I realized that the popups in my pool were not all working as expected. Well, the pump itself was running, so that wasn't the problem. It had to be the A&A Water Actuated Valve unit. However, said unit was not marked with identifying information. How could I investigate? That was when I realized that there were US Patent numbers on the top (see photo). So, I Googled those and found it was the name I showed above, and I was able to find an online manual. What did we do before digital photos in cameras? And what did we do before the internet made searching for this type of arcana so easy? No, it is not fixed yet, but I think I know what the problem is. I am hoping I can replace only the center shaft and not have to buy the whole unit and do a bunch of plumbing work to replace it.

On Saturday night, we went to a local mini-golf place made over for Halloween. Well, JV did not, but the girls went. We had a good time and followed that up with some video games ebfore we left the place. They played a jump rope electronic game, dance machine, a new version of air hockey, and grab for candy. I played the air hockey with them, and played one game of Mars Attacks.

It has been at least a week since I heard about a new flavor of Oreos. Now, they are introducing "Filled Cupcake," inspired by the Hostess Cupcakes. I actually have not tasted any of the alternate flavors from recent years. Have you? Which did you like?

It has also been at least a week since we saw an Ikea hack. They claim this one will save enough to pay your rent. Wow, that's a pretty good saving. It went from this...

I cannot remember ever sharing anything about predictions in 1900 of what the year 2000 would be like. These drawings are both accurate and waaaay off. Take a look at them here. Whale bus is one of the things that has NOT come to pass.

I just saw an article talking about things that will soon become obsolete. One of them is remote controls. Do you agree? They are making the case that our smartphone can do everything the remotes do. And what about alarm clocks? Well, check out the list and see what you think.

Last night, we went to one of those pizza places that has a huge Wurlitzer organ that does all sorts of instruments and sounds. The GRANDS went crazy dancing at almost every song. It was a lot of fun. I was tired and all I did was watch them. The organist even did an old Emerson, Lake and Palmer song (Hoedown, an arrangement of an Aaron Copland song).

Of course, they have been available since 1999 (you knew that, of course, so you have been partying like it's 1999 already). Now, they have also been placed on Facebook and Flickr. Do you like BBQ? There is a place in Austin that is stirring up a little controversy along with their sauce. Franklin BBQ had disallowed one person holding a place in line for a group earlier this summer. Now, they have banned all line holders and order takers. The question is: Do ya feel lucky, punk? Would you wait five hours to eat at any place? I can already tell you my patience is not that long. Sorry, Franklin.

You know what goes good with BBQ? A nice root beer, or even Dr Pepper.

Five-ingredient slow cooker recipes? Yup, we have some today, and they sound pretty good. No, I have not tried any of them.

Time zup for today. It's Monday and I have a LOT to do, We had the GRANDS over the weekend and I didn't work as much as I usually do. It was nice to get the break, and I will tell you more about our weekend tomorrow. Until then, make it a Miraculous Monday.

Mis-Reading The Headlines

Can you eat healthily just about anywhere? According to one author, the answer is yes. Here is what he says about eating at a gas station:

I am REALLY skeptical about a new app called Peeple that lets you rate people like Yelp does for businesses. I read the following: 'The app’s Facebook claims that its mission is “to find the good in you,” and a post responding to a negative article asserts, “We are a positivity app for positive people!” Only time will tell if people on Peeple use the app to find only good and spread only positivity, but Cordray and McCullough are betting that they will.' I am much less positive that no negative ratings will be posted. Will you use it to rate others, or maybe look up others to see their ratings?

As you know, sometimes when I read things, I put my own interpretation on the words. Take a look at this screenshot from Yahoo.

OK, see the first story teased? Many of you have probably heard before that shaving cream rubbed into the mirror can prevent fogging. When I saw that, MY first thought was, "Of course that's true. However, with shaving cream on the mirror, you can't see yourself either." Did you think that? And yes, I DO use the sink to amplify my iPhones speakers when I am taking a shower on the weekends. On weekdays, MBH is asleep, so no music, plus it is just too stinking early to listen to music.

First off, I do not have an extra $53,000,000... right now. Second off, it would be sooo cool to own a house that is one story above ground and another five stories underground. Who among us doesn't need 51,000 square feet of living space, right? 25 bathrooms is practically the minimum nowadays, so that qualifies this house as a necessity. Four kitchens means my daughter-in-love could stock her own kitchen in our house and cook for us all the time. Yeah, baby.

Another headline caught my eye. Again in Yahoo, I found the lede of "This Isn't Your Father's Treehouse" odd. My first thought was "Wait. My father has a treehouse somewhere?" because I interpreted the headline as saying, "This isn't his. His treehouse is somewhere else." Then I realized it could also be saying, "This IS your mother's treehouse." Yes, there could be something wrong in the way my brain is wired. I will admit it.

Nine uses for Alka-Seltzer that you never thought of. have you even thought about Alka-Seltzer in the last twenty years?

Hey, how much do you spend in a year? Would you make the sacrifices it takes to live on only $14,000 per year? Just think how much you could save if you did that. Well, one family of four in Nevada is doing it right now. One of their budget numbers is $400 a month for groceries. I am sure my number is twice that, and we only have three in our house. And they only allow themselves one tank of gas per month. Someday, in retirement, I am sure I will have to worry about that. For now, I am trying to cut back some, but life still goes on. What about you? How are you doing on finances month to month?

At one time, my Salesman Son (SS) used TiVo for recording and watching TV programs and movies. Then, their box died or their low price deal ran out or something, and they moved to DISH or something. Anyway, TiVo has a new box that they hope will bring back customers. Yes, it is bent like that on purpose. No, you can't really stack anything on top of it. At a time when many are thinking of giving up on TV and watching everything online, is this something you would even care about? TiVo thinks so, because it searches and browses both Web services and what’s on TV, treating them identically. Well, read more about it and decide for yourself.

Are police departments right to stage fake activities in order to catch people breaking the law? Let me explain. Let's say there was a law of no cell phone use while driving. Did you say it like I asked you to? Anyway, you see a panhandler standing at a stoplight and grab your phone for a photo. As you pull away, you are stopped and ticketed for using your phone while driving. Is that fair? A lot of places think so. I wonder what my local laws say?

OK, now say you are at a stoplight and have a hankering for peanut butter and coffee. What can you do? If you are in the Boston area, you can got to the store and pick up Steem caffeinated peanut butter. If it gets stuck to the roof of your mouth, you can lick it off even quicker.

Do you shop Whole Foods very often? I do sometimes, and we lunch their sometimes. I had never thought about the source of their products before, but now, I see they are phasing out foods produced by prisoners. A Whole Foods spokesman said that the company had sourced prisoner-made products as a way to “help people get back on their feet and eventually become contributing members of society,” but that it chose to stop doing so because some customers were uncomfortable with it. Is that where the 'con' in 'consumer' comes from?

Three more women come forward with claims against Bill Cosby. That is really sad, both for them and for him. With so many women making these charges, something must have been going on. It's very disappointing.

Did you listen to the podcast Serial last year? It was hugely popular. In fact, now they are making a TV program about the making of the next Serial podcast. I suppose I should give it a listen sometime. SS loved it.
